Summer Must-Haves for Nurturing Your Body & Mind
Now that summer is in full swing, it’s the perfect time to prioritize your well-being. This season, treat yourself to a selection of must-haves backed by science in order to take care of both your body and your mind. Here’s a guide to some ways you can take care of yourself this summer.
Hydrating Skincare Essentials
Summer’s constant sun can dry out your skin, so skin hydration during this time of year is more important than ever. Invest in a high-quality, lightweight moisturizer with SPF to protect and nourish your skin. According to a study in the National Library of Medicine, antioxidants like vitamin C combat harmful free radicals that can damage tissues and cause disease, so make sure to include antioxidants in your skincare routine.
Refreshing Herbal Teas
Water is your best friend in the summer, but to spice things up, you can refresh yourself with green or herbal teas. According to Harvard Health, green tea can boost your immune system and prevent inflammation and other health concerns, largely due to its high levels of antioxidants. Herbal teas have less caffeine than coffee do, but they still provide a boost of energy.
Reading
According to Harvard Health, mental stimulation is just as important as physical activity in order to promote a healthy lifestyle. One great way to stimulate your brain in a healthy way is by reading. Reading is especially a great way to unwind and quiet the mind before bed. Audiobooks are also a great option for those who prefer to listen while doing other tasks.
Digital Detox
Give yourself a break from the constant influx of digital information by scheduling regular digital detoxes. Setting aside specific times each day to unplug from your devices can free up time for you to engage in activities that bring you joy, like other hobbies or interacting with nature. It’s especially important to limit digital time before bed for more restful sleep. According to the Sleep Foundation, blue light from electronics can decrease melatonin production and reduce quality of sleep. Disconnecting from technology before bed can significantly reduce stress and leave you feeling more rested.
Journaling for Mental Health
Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be extremely helpful for staying mentally healthy. Even just setting aside a few minutes a day to journal can help clear your mind and reduce anxiety. You can journal however you feel comfortable: outlining goals, reflecting on your day, or expressing gratitude. Journaling is also a great way to track self-care progress.
Hopefully these science-based summer must-haves will help your body and mind stay healthy this summer!
