Suburban Summer: Connect with Nature Right Where You Are

When I look back on past summers, some of my favorite memories are tied to vacations: Whitewater rafting in Colorado. Wandering the cinnamon-scented woods on Prince Edward Island. Strolling through breathtaking gardens in Scotland. Compared to such stunning locations, my home in the suburbs of Michigan always tasted somewhat bland when I returned. Between the strip malls, schools, and neighborhoods, there’s not much in the way of scenic views. Yet through the years of suburban summers, I discovered beauty in abundance right under my nose.

In the season of capitalizing on the outdoors, it can be discouraging when you have nothing to go outside to. So, if your surroundings feel lackluster, here are some ideas to engage the great outdoors.

Look Up

Sometimes connecting with nature is a matter of focus. From the radiance of a sunrise to the brilliance of the stars, there is much to appreciate if you adjust your gaze.

Take It Outside

Next time you go to read a book or tune into your favorite podcast, instead of heading for the couch, take it outside! String up the hammock, grab a folding lawn chair or spread an old blanket on the ground and enjoy the fresh air.

Put Out a Bird Feeder

Here’s an easy way to let nature come to you. Simply purchase a feeder, fill it with seed, hang it up and watch for feathery visitors. Alternatively, you can search for homemade feeders online and create your own.

Explore Local Nature Trails

While southeastern Michigan cannot claim the most exciting landscapes, there are lots of pretty wooded trails if you’re willing to look for them. I invite you to explore your surroundings! Google nature trails in your area and pick a couple to visit. You just might discover some hidden gems.

Visit a You-Pick Flower Farm

Get outside and support a local business at the same time. Snip your own blooms and arrange a one-of-a-kind bouquet as a centerpiece for your table or a gift for a friend.

More Than Meets the Eye

When you live in the same place for a few years, it’s easy to let your eyes glaze over. Can I encourage you to step outside with a fresh set of eyes? Take your time. Use every sense. There is wonder waiting right around the corner.
