Celebrating Trailblazing Women of Color in Design

In the dynamic realm of design, women of color have emerged as pioneers, shaping industries and leaving an indelible mark on history. Among these trailblazers stand Shannon Maldonado, Robin Wilson, and Tara Paige, whose remarkable contributions have not only reshaped the landscape of design, but also uplifted communities in profound ways.

Shannon Maldonado

Her career embodies versatility and creativity, transcending traditional boundaries to encompass fashion, interior design, art direction, hospitality, and events. Renowned for her quirky style, Shannon's influence shines through her South Philly boutique and design studio, Yowie. Her recent ventures include the transformation of Dye House, a boutique hotel in Rhode Island, into a vibrant oasis of color and creativity. Additionally, her involvement in designing Ethel’s Club, the first social and wellness club for people of color, underscores her commitment to inclusivity and innovation. With her exuberant style and playful aesthetic, Shannon continues to captivate audiences, solidifying her status as an up-and-coming designer to watch.

Robin Wilson

Her life mission revolves around helping the staggering 60 million Americans suffering from allergies or asthma. Drawing from her personal journey with respiratory health challenges, Robin has become a leading advocate for clean, sustainable living through her Clean Design protocol. Through books, media engagements, and educational initiatives, she empowers consumers to embrace hypoallergenic, eco-friendly lifestyles, revolutionizing the way we interact with our living spaces. Her commitment to empowering consumers is exemplified through her recent collaboration with Macy's on the exclusive Clean Design Home x Martex collection. Becoming the first Black female Founder of a global, licensed hypoallergenic textile brand.

Tara Paige

Her passion for design was ignited amid the Covid-19 pandemic as she sought to extend her living space beyond four walls. However, her exploration revealed a glaring underrepresentation of African Americans in outdoor design. Determined to fill this void, Paige founded the Facebook group "Black Women Who Love Outdoor Living Spaces," which has surged to over 200,000 members since April 2020. Through this platform, she has created a thriving community where Black women nationwide connect, share, and find inspiration in outdoor décor and design. Tara's initiative has not only provided a lifeline during times of isolation, but has also fostered deep bonds and sisterhood among members, underscoring the transformative power of representation and community.

As we celebrate the contributions of Shannon, Robin, and Tara, let us draw inspiration from their stories and continue to champion diversity, inclusivity, and innovation in the design space. Together, we can create a brighter, more equitable future for all.
