Q & A

Can you describe your journey from being an Air Force veteran to being a groundbreaking designer ?

Sierré: The journey was not easy at all. The reason is because being in the military, everything is already established for you. How much you get paid to where you live, even health care. I mean, everything is already there for you and established. So, making that decision, and even risk of getting out of the military and pursuing a new found journey and purpose. At the time, it wasn't even solidified that I even wanted to get into fashion and design, but something that was very much calling me, and it kept pulling me closer and closer.

The journey wasn't necessarily the easiest. I had to take a risk, a leap of faith. I definitely had to speak faith, even trying to find startup funds. That wasn't easy, because, honestly, everything still is very much self-funded.

I'm also self-taught. I haven't been to fashion design school at all. So, it's pretty much like off the muscle; being able to go from sketching to full on product development. Being able to see that first sample was breathtaking. In real time I got to see myself dream of something, and actually see it come to life.

I wish I had a better and bigger word for that, but it was like, whoa. Like, oh my gosh. Like, I did that. That's crazy, you know. So, when people ask how, or where the inspiration comes from, I'm just like, you know what? Y'all, I'm not going to lie to you, and this is going to sound so simple and cliche, but I was called to it, and I listened. I just did it.

I didn't have prior skills to this. I didn't have prior sewing skills or pattern making skills or even putting tech packs together. None of that. It was simply based off just communication. I will say that is one skill I did learn, because you really, really, really, have to know how to communicate with people. You're talking to all different kinds of people from the US, and people not from the US. Sometimes certain things can be a language barrier, but at the end of the day, if you know how to effectively communicate, you can still get the job done.

Being a visionary is your God given talent. Being able to see something, sketch it, and then see it come to life.

Sierré: Yeah, I don't know how to explain that feeling. It was just so insane to really see it, and see those big boxes sitting out in front of my house coming in. I was like, oh my gosh. Like, it was one thing when I said I was, but then to look back and see all the work that was put into these robes. It was amazing to see. I definitely was overwhelmed. I think every accomplishment, in every step I got through, I think I cried every time. I will say, I wish I documented more of that process, but because I was learning and actively putting something into production. I was so focused that pulling out a camera was not in my sight. I really do wish I did more like vlogging, so I could take people along that journey more, and I can see that story and development of the robes.

What inspired the design and concept behind your luxury resort robe collection?

Sierré: It was a multiple of things. The first one being I wanted resort wear. At the time, I designed the resort wear collection that I plan to drop in 2025. In the midst of that, I got an opportunity to be a sponsor for a woman's getaway resort. I love to be able to show my personality, my creativity. So initially I was like, okay, well, what can I do? What’s better than just handing out, you know, Serene cards. I was like, oh my gosh, a robe. I was like that just makes so much sense, a robe. So that was one of them. And then the second reason again was, I was in the beginning of my soft girl era. I was always, always in a robe. So again, it just clicked for me, like, oh, a resort, oh a robe. They did tell me, like, you know what they had planned and what they had scheduled, and I was like, imagine being in a Serene Serenity robe first ever created. And not only that, but I get to feel essentially, like, leave my mark and show myself, my Creator through it. It's kind of like that first introduction without even knowing, like, who I am. So, from there, I created the robes.

At first, I was like do I do a wholesale order kind of robe? And then I was like, no. For me, that's too basic. I have to try to do something else. So, then I sketched the robes. I wanted to make sure that the functionality was there, the fit was there. Not only that, if these were going to be designer robes, and something that you've never seen before, I had to find the right fabrics. Women love a silk, satin robe. Also, the location of the resort was going to be in Chicago. Personally, I've never been to Chicago. I was not 100% sure about what the weather was like during the time at the resort. I was like, I only know of Chicago as cold. I noticed that women like to feel a little bit of weight in their robes. As well as fit, whether you're petite or plus size. I didn't know who was coming to this retreat. I wanted to make sure the robes were durable; something that you can keep for a long time. Not like one of those goodie bags where you see it, and it's been in the back in your closet for the last five years. I wanted to make sure you got something from the retreat that you were able to wear for as long as you had it, over and over.

The robes really were my first step in showing people what I could do, as well as my ability to be very intentional when it comes to designing. Another thing I noticed with the robes, is that they're all one, either one size fits all, or they're small/medium or large/extra-large. I've worn those robes before, and I'm actually pretty small. That was another thing that was very important to me, to make sure that every robe was small, medium, large, extra-large. It needs to be dual sizes, and not the sizes coming all into one. We come in different sizes. Then the flavors of the color. I want to make sure that everybody, whether you are neutral girl, kind of in the middle, or you kind of like a little color, that's where the green one came into play. There was a lot of inspiration, a lot of elements, a lot of movement, and a lot of pieces when it came to designing those robes.

How do you envision the robes being used? For example, spa treatments, lounging at home?

Sierré: When I designed the robes, I wanted them to be something that you more so own. I really want you to be able to take the robes to a woman's resort, travel and vacation. I also want women to be able to cultivate their own resort at home as well. So yes, ultimately, being able to wear it at home. Feeling really good and taking on the world.  I'm a homebody. Obviously, I don't need to get up and get dressed to go out somewhere all the time. I don't really like to go out all the time. I love to go on vacation. Even now, being in the nine to five world and not being in the military, being able to cultivate that in my home has been more important than ever.

At the time when I entered my soft girl area era, I was still in the military. Being out of the military, now I have a completely different perspective on things, on life, even quality of life; the ability to take care of yourself.

With designing, right? How do I give people some kind of relief, you know, like joy, what is it that they're missing? What would other people consider to be like, even the smallest of luxury? At first, I really thought luxury was just having all this money and all these fancy cars, you have the best bag. Nowadays luxury girl, is really being able to just breathe at this point. You know, breathe and have peace of mind.

Luxury, for sure, has definitely changed. People are even more intentional about where they spend their money; spending it on things that add value to their life, right? When I produce the 2025 collection, it incorporates everything that we're talking about right now. All of these are things that I've been dwelling on for the past three months in conjunction with going on vacation. These past three months, I've taken a lot of time for myself, and building an extremely strong foundation for Serene Serenity.
