A Bouquet of Selfless Love

The word "selfless" has negative connotations because of the various perspectives on considering others before yourself.

Selfless love is a beautiful thing because it is not about diminishing who you are or losing your identity in caring for others, but more about a heart posture wrapped in purpose and the command of loving one another as you love yourself. Selfless love is not transactional.

I recently witnessed one of the most beautiful bouquets I have seen in a long time. The bouquet of flowers changed the appearance of the room with its vibrant and bright colors and the strategic placement of the flowers. I distinctly recall how the flowers caught the eye of the people as they walked into the room as they did mine and although the flowers were different, they accomplished a significant goal: they uplifted and changed the atmosphere of the room.

Just as those flowers garnered attention from the people who witnessed their beauty and brought smiles to the faces of those who came into the room, selfless love when properly executed builds others and brings fulfillment.

Selfless love is in no way saying you should not set boundaries otherwise you are to become a doormat, however, being selfless has a positive impact on your well-being.

Jasmin Roy stated that, “The power of selflessness lies in its ability to enhance our mental and emotional well-being in several ways.” She then goes on to list a few of those ways in an article entitled “The Power of Selflessness: Impact on Well-being.”

Just as the bouquet I witnessed was made up of a variety of well-blended flowers, you too are like a flower planted in the garden of life to uplift, encourage, and inspire others. You will never lose being selfless.

Be intentional this year in expressing love through words and actions without expecting anything in return; be okay with your selfless act of love being done in private. In a day of social media and oversharing, everything does not need to be publicly displayed.

Again, remember selfless acts of love is not losing you or the lack of self-love, but instead it is a testament to you loving yourself and being confident in who God called you to be, and you understanding the power of being that bouquet of selfless love.
